Montgomery County VINE Coverage
Virginia Victim Information and Notification Everyday, or Virginia VINE, provides search and alert functions for participating local and regional jails. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division directly links the service for notification of an inmate's release. That official link confirms a local access route. It does not mean VINELink is a complete archive of every person once held in the county, and it does not convert a current event screen into a certified release record.
Coverage depends on the reporting custody system. Local-jail events belong in Virginia VINE and VINELink. After a transfer into Virginia Department of Corrections custody, VADOC uses its separate Victim Services and NAAVI process. Federal custody is outside both systems. The Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Marshals Service, or Immigration and Customs Enforcement becomes the correct branch according to the case. A person can leave Montgomery County Jail yet remain confined by one of those authorities.

Search Montgomery County VINE
Start with enough information to separate people who share a name. A full legal name, spelling variants, birth information lawfully shown, jail, booking identifier, or other agency number can help. An alert time may reflect when the system sent the message rather than the precise time the person crossed the release door.

For completed release proof, ask the jail for its release entry and compare the court disposition. VINE provides useful corroboration. It is not the jail's certified event file, and it does not state every reason why custody ended.
Register Montgomery Release Alerts
Registration should begin from the correct individual record. Current screens may offer phone, email, text, TTY, or app delivery, but a method should not be promised unless that record offers it. Enter contact information carefully. A wrong digit or address can prevent delivery. Automated phone registration uses a private personal identification number, or PIN, to confirm or stop calls. Electronic methods may require a link or code.

Alerts can concern release, transfer, escape, or another custody change according to the record and system. Read the message literally. A transfer alert is not a community-release alert. Even a release alert should be checked with the reporting jail when the receiving destination matters.
Two Montgomery Notification Routes
Montgomery County has a distinctive second route. In addition to VINELink, the Corrections Division publishes a county victim-notification form. The form covers escape, name change, transfer, release, and discharge for qualifying crime victims and lists fax 540-382-6942. Those separate event names are useful. They reduce the risk of treating every departure from the jail as freedom from custody.
The local form and VINELink are parallel routes, not duplicates with guaranteed identical timing. Keep registration details current, and ask the Corrections Division which route applies to the specific custody record. The county form does not replace a VADOC notification registration after state transfer. Nor does it extend into federal custody. Each new custodian must be checked through its own official channel.

Montgomery VINE to VADOC Handoff
Virginia's local-jail VINE and VADOC NAAVI boundary matters most after a felony transfer. A Montgomery jail transfer event can end the local record's role even though the person remains incarcerated. Search the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator for the new custody or community-supervision record. VADOC states that its locator updates daily and accepts a seven-digit DOC ID or the required name fields.
VADOC Victim Services lists advance release, actual release, transfer, escape, recapture, death, and related notifications. Advance notice may use an anticipated date before the final event. Actual release means departure from VADOC custody, but an external detainer can still lead to another custodian. Re-register or confirm notification coverage after the handoff. Do not assume a local VINE registration follows the person into NAAVI.
Montgomery VINE Check Limits
Data lag is unavoidable. The public record may update after the actual movement, while a notification may arrive on its own schedule. Name variants and system handoffs can also lead to silence. A missing result should prompt a direct facility check, not a claim that the person is free. For Montgomery County Jail, ask whether the person is confined now and, if not, whether the event was release to the community or transfer.
When timing or destination must be documented, make a focused request to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Identify the person, approximate admission or release period, and booking number if known. Ask for the existing booking and release entry, the recorded date and time, the release type or reason, legal authority, and receiving agency if transferred. Virginia FOIA does not require the sheriff to create a new explanation or custom report. An existing electronic entry is the better target, and a requester can ask for a cost estimate before work begins.
Federal cases follow other sources. The BOP locator covers many sentenced federal prisoners and former prisoners. USMS handles federal pretrial and transport custody but has no matching general historical release locator. ICE's locator addresses current and some recent ICE custody, with eligibility and timing limits. None of those events belongs in local VINE unless a participating jail separately reported its own movement.
Registry data has another narrow purpose. The Virginia State Police registry covers only people whom law requires to register, and it does not supply the jail's release date. It cannot stand in for VINE, VADOC, or the Montgomery release record. Use the source that owns the event being checked.
Confirm Montgomery VINE Releases
Build a short evidence chain. Save the exact VINE event wording and the time it was checked. Ask the Montgomery County Jail for the release or movement entry, including date, type, authority, and receiving agency if transferred. Then compare the Montgomery court docket for bond, dismissal, sentence, or probation. Use VADOC when state custody or supervision is plausible.
Two sources often answer different parts of the same question. VINE may show that the jail reported departure. The release entry can state the event type, while a court order explains the legal authority. A VADOC result may show that custody or supervision continued. That distinction makes a VINE inmate check useful without asking it to prove more than the reporting system says.
For an older event, request the durable agency record. Public custody screens can change after release, but the jail entry and court disposition preserve the chronology. Match each date to its source and keep transfer separate from discharge.
