Montgomery County Released Inmate Records
A Montgomery County release is a recorded departure from a particular custodian. For the county jail, that event can be return to the community on bond or recognizance, release after time served, completion of a local term, dismissal, or placement on Home Electronic Monitoring. It can also be a transfer to VADOC, another jail, a hospital, ICE, the U.S. Marshals Service, or another jurisdiction. Only some of those paths end confinement.
The Sheriff's Corrections Division supplies direct inmate information and notification routes, but no public Montgomery County jail roster or recent-release feed was identified. A former occupant therefore needs an event record, not an inference from an empty search. Ask what happened, when it happened, under whose authority, and where the person went.
- Release
- Departure from a named facility, which may be to the community or another authority.
- Discharge
- End of a sentence or supervision obligation, distinct from an earlier physical release.
- Time served
- A custodial term ended after applicable credit, though another case or hold may remain.
- Parole
- Conditional release from an eligible prison sentence into community supervision.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision, often tied to a suspended sentence.
- Detainer
- A request from another authority to hold or receive the person.
Montgomery County Inmate Release Types
Release labels should be read with the next custodian in mind. Bond means pretrial confinement ended under a court order, but the charge continues unless separately disposed. Time served or sentence served means the calculated term for that commitment ended. A dismissal, nolle prosequi, or acquittal can end one charge while another charge or hold continues. Parole is conditional prison release; probation may follow jail or occur without VADOC prison custody.
| Release label | Meaning | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Recognizance or bond | Pretrial departure under court terms | Jail event and bond order |
| Time or sentence served | Calculated local term ended | Jail credit record and sentencing order |
| Parole | Eligible prison term continues under supervision | VADOC status and Parole Board decision |
| Probation | Court supervision, often with suspended time | Court order and District 28 routing |
| Dismissal or acquittal | Named charge ended | Court disposition and jail departure |
| Transfer or detainer | Sending facility's control ended, custody continued | Receiving-agency record |
| Deceased | Custody ended by death | Official agency record; never community release |
Release dates can also describe different events in one case. A county record may show transfer to state authority, followed months or years later by VADOC parole or discharge. Keep both dates and label each custodian. A parole grant, projected date, or court order is not the same as completed physical release.
Montgomery County Release Record Fields
A useful event entry links the person to one custody period and explains departure. Virginia Code Section 53.1-116 requires the jailer to maintain commitment and prisoner records, including the person committed, terms of confinement, offense or cause, and date received. That foundation supports a focused request, though it does not require a public website or promise that every internal field is open.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Recorded name and identifier | Matches the person rather than a similar name |
| Booking facility and number | Connects the event to the correct custodian and intake |
| Admission date and time | Defines the custody period being examined |
| Release date and time | Records departure from that facility |
| Release type or reason | Distinguishes bond, completion, dismissal, and transfer |
| Legal authority or case | Links the event to an order or charge |
| Destination or receiving agency | Separates community release from continued custody |
| Supervision or detainer | Shows a possible obligation after departure |
Other records may associate bond terms, sentence computation, property receipt, photograph, or supervising district. Ask only for fields needed to verify the event. The sheriff can withhold or redact protected investigative, juvenile, victim, medical, security, sealed, or expunged material. A narrow request makes the nonexempt release facts easier to identify.
Request Montgomery County Release Records
The county's FOIA page lists Capt. Mark Hollandsworth at mcso-info@vamcso.org for sheriff records. The sheriff's office is at 1 East Main Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073, with main phone 540-382-6915. Immediate status questions go to the jail at 540-382-6904 or whittakerkf@montgomerycountyva.gov. A written record is stronger than a phone answer when a durable chronology is required.
- Give the full name, alternate spellings, approximate admission or release date, and booking or case number if known.
- Ask for the existing booking and release or discharge entry. Name the date, time, event type, authority, and destination fields.
- If relevant, request the adult routine intake photograph separately in its existing electronic form.
- Invite redaction of exempt portions and ask the office to cite any withholding rule.
- Request electronic delivery and an advance cost estimate. Ask which retention schedule applies if the event is old.
Virginia FOIA requests need not be written or cite the statute, but they must identify existing records with reasonable specificity. The statutory access right is framed for Virginia citizens and qualifying Virginia media, and the agency may ask for a name and legal address. A public body generally responds within five working days by producing, withholding with citations, producing in part, reporting that the record cannot be found, or invoking allowed additional time. Actual reasonable costs may be charged, and a deposit can apply when an estimate exceeds $200. No fixed county release-record or booking-photo fee was found.
Montgomery County Release Record Law
Section 2.2-3704 sets the request process, response options, and actual-cost framework. Section 2.2-3706 governs law-enforcement and criminal records. It generally mandates adult routine intake photos and adult arrestee identity and charge-status information, subject to stated exceptions, while allowing discretion for parts of correctional and supervision files.
Court records provide a second layer. Montgomery General District Court handles misdemeanors and preliminary felony stages. Montgomery Circuit Court handles felony trials, sentencing, and appeals. Their public case information can show the case number, charge, hearings, disposition, sentence, suspended time, probation, and appeal activity. Those facts explain legal authority but may not reveal the jail's exact door-out time or a later detainer.
Expungement must be tied to the effective law. As of the August 8, 2026 research date, the pre-December 1, 2026 version of Section 19.2-392.2 mainly covered acquittal, nolle prosequi, qualifying dismissal, identity misuse, and specified innocence, pardon, or vacatur cases. Virginia displays a broader transition effective December 1, 2026. A missing public case or image can reflect lawful sealing, not proof that no release occurred.
Montgomery Electronic Monitoring Release
Montgomery County documents Home Electronic Monitoring for screened sentenced nonviolent offenders under Section 53.1-131.2. Screening is listed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. after sentence, with Monday reporting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The county mentions weekly monitoring fees but publishes no amount. Do not estimate one.
Home electronic monitoring is a move out of the jail building while sentence controls continue. It is not complete discharge. Confirm the court order, program status, and current restrictions with the Corrections Division. A release list that merely shows departure would lose this local distinction, which is why the event type belongs in every targeted request.
Property After Montgomery Inmate Release
The county documents dual signatures when property is delivered and says excess mail or paperwork may be released by the incarcerated person to family or friends. It does not publish a final discharge-property procedure. Call the jail about identification, medication, clothing, cash, paperwork, the actual exit, and any authorization needed before planning pickup.
Rules from the nearby New River Valley Regional Jail should not be copied into Montgomery County's process. The facilities are distinct. A person or family member should confirm property and exit details with the facility that actually holds the person.
Montgomery Bond Hearings and Release
The Montgomery General District Court publishes jail arraignment and bond-hearing blocks on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:40 to 10:30 a.m. That schedule helps locate the legal event behind a possible bond release. It does not promise that the jail will release someone during or right after that block.
Bond must be authorized, any required security must be completed, jail processing must finish, and outside holds must be checked. Compare the bond order with the later jail release time. A Tuesday order and Wednesday departure can both be correct because they label different steps.
Getting Home After Montgomery Release
Christiansburg's official transportation page lists Explorer, Go Anywhere, BT Commuter, Smart Way, and Virginia Breeze. No official source connects a specific route or stop to the jail's physical release door. Treat those services as planning options only.
Confirm the exit and approximate time with the jail, then verify the current route with the operator. Release processing, bond completion, weather, transport, and holds can shift a plan. The jail has not published standard weekend or holiday release times.
Montgomery Release to ICE
ICE states that a detainer can ask a local jail for notice and up to 48 hours of continued custody beyond the point of ordinary release so ICE may assume control. A Montgomery jail entry marked release to ICE is therefore a transfer, not community release. Ask the jail for the receiving agency and time.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator covers current detainees and some people released from ICE within 60 days, subject to eligibility and processing limits. A no-result proves little. No ICE detention center or contract was identified in Montgomery County, so use this branch only when the case record, jail, or another agency identifies immigration custody.
Montgomery County Jail Release Setting
The Corrections Division says the current jail building was reconstructed in 1987 and 1988 at a cost of $1.5 million. This is historical context, not a current capacity figure, release count, or processing-time measure. No official annual booking total, release volume, or average stay was found.
The county jail is the only facility in the research Facility Map. No VADOC prison, BOP institution, or dedicated ICE detention center was identified inside Montgomery County. NRVRJ is nearby but its official authority-members description omits Montgomery, so it is a conditional cross-check rather than a county facility page.
Search Montgomery County Released Inmates
Begin with the custody system most likely to hold the event. A recent local arrest starts with Montgomery County Jail. A felony transfer, state sentence, parole, or probation possibility belongs in VADOC. A federal sentence belongs in BOP. ICE and USMS require their own branches. Searching all systems without first identifying the custodian can create false matches and confusing dates.
- Call Montgomery County Jail and ask whether the person is confined. If not, request the departure type, time, and destination.
- Check Virginia VINE for the participating local-jail event and read transfer wording literally.
- Search VADOC for state custody or supervision, using a name or seven-digit DOC ID.
- Open the Montgomery court case and match the bond, disposition, or sentence to the jail event.
- Use BOP, ICE, or USMS channels only when federal or immigration custody is supported.
- Request the underlying event entry when online systems do not provide durable proof.
Identity matching is essential. Confirm a common name with a booking, DOC, case, or federal identifier, plus the jurisdiction and custody dates. A photograph alone is not enough. Record the time of each online check because local, VINE, VADOC, and court systems can update on different schedules.
VADOC Montgomery Release Lookup
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people in state institutions, probationers, parolees, some people under VADOC authority in local or regional jail, institutional hospitals, and CCAP. It is valuable after a Montgomery felony transfer or when community supervision may explain why a person is no longer in jail. It is not a complete archive of everyone ever booked in Montgomery County.
| Search field | Requirement | Use |
|---|---|---|
| First name | At least first three letters with full surname | Broad name match |
| Last name | Full last name | Primary name key |
| DOC ID | Seven digits, used instead of name | Strongest direct match |
| Location | Optional | Narrows after a broad search |
| Race, gender, age | Optional | Resolves similar names when lawfully shown |
VADOC says the locator updates daily and may still be inaccurate or outdated. Its landing page promises location and release-date information, but the exact label on a result was not verified. Do not relabel the interface as "projected" or "anticipated" without seeing the lawful matching record. Fully discharged people may require a VADOC inactive-record request.
The official VADOC search screen demonstrates the fields used for a Montgomery County state-custody or supervision check.
The screen supports a VADOC branch only. A former county-jail detainee with no VADOC authority may never appear there.
Montgomery Release Notifications
Virginia uses two notification layers. Virginia VINE serves participating local and regional jail custody. Montgomery County links to VINELink and also publishes a written victim-notification form that covers escape, name change, transfer, release, and discharge. When custody moves into VADOC, the state Victim Services or NAAVI route becomes the relevant notification system.
A VINE actual-release event is useful evidence from the reporting jail, but it does not by itself state bond, time served, dismissal, transfer, detainer, or death. Match the facility and identifier, then ask the jail to clarify the destination. VADOC lists advance release, actual release, transfer, escape, recapture, death, and other state events. An outside detainer can still change whether actual departure led to the community.
The VINELink search view is the official starting point for a participating local record.
Registration should occur on the correctly matched record, with the method and confirmation offered by the current interface.
Montgomery Court Release Records
The Virginia judiciary's General District and Circuit Court systems preserve case details after a short jail stay. Search Montgomery by name or case number. General District Court covers misdemeanors and preliminary felony stages; a felony may move into Circuit Court for final disposition and sentence. Useful fields include charge, hearings, bond action, disposition, sentence, suspended time, probation, and appeal activity.
The General District Court portal shows the entry point for a local case search.
Use the docket to explain the legal event, then use the jail entry for actual departure. Court dates and release times are related but not interchangeable.
Federal Montgomery Release Search
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present and can show former federal custody and a release date. Search by BOP register, FBI, DCDC, or INS number, or by name and available identifying fields. "Released" or "Not in BOP Custody" means only that BOP no longer holds the person. Another authority or federal supervision may still apply.
USMS manages federal pretrial and transport custody and may use local, state, private, or federal beds. It has no comparable public historical release locator. Use the federal case, counsel, and appropriate district contact before BOP designation. The BOP search interface is shown below for a sentenced federal branch.
A BOP result should never be used to explain an ordinary Montgomery County Jail departure unless the case chronology actually enters federal custody.
Montgomery Released Versus In Custody
Each source proves only its own part of custody. A live jail answer establishes current local confinement. A jail release entry establishes departure from that jail. VADOC establishes state custody or supervision. Courts establish orders and disposition. BOP establishes federal custody status. VINE reports an event supplied by a participating agency.
| System | Best use | What absence cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Montgomery County Jail | Current local custody and its release or transfer entry | Freedom from every other authority |
| Virginia VINE | Participating local event and alert | Certified discharge or destination |
| VADOC locator | State custody and community supervision | No earlier county booking |
| Virginia courts | Bond, disposition, sentence, probation | Exact door-out time |
| BOP locator | Sentenced federal custody and former release | No state, local, ICE, or USMS custody |
| ICE ODLS | Current and limited recent ICE custody | Community release after a no-result |
Why is a released person missing from the roster? Live custody tools are designed to show who is held now. Once the sending jail records departure, the lasting proof shifts to its release entry, the receiving custodian, the court, or supervision records.
Montgomery County Release Facility
Montgomery County Jail is the only mapped detention facility for this build. It is operated by the Sheriff's Office Corrections Division at the Christiansburg sheriff and courthouse complex. Community exits include bond, recognizance, time served, dismissal, local sentence completion, and approved monitoring. Other departures can lead to VADOC, another jail, hospital, federal authority, ICE, or another jurisdiction.
The nearby NRVRJ remains a case-specific cross-check. Its lookup includes an "Include released inmates" option and multiple identifier paths, but the authority's official members list omits Montgomery. Use it only when another reliable record places the person there. Geography alone is not enough.
Note: Montgomery County has no mapped state prison, federal prison, or dedicated ICE detention center, so those searches remain custody-specific fallbacks.
